Book editor explains how much it costs to use
book editing services in the UK!
It's one of the questions I'm asked most often, and it makes sense as to why!
You've finished your manuscript (or you're close to finishing it), you've started looking into editing, but then you discover that prices seem to be all over the place. 🤯
One editor quotes a few hundred pounds, while another quotes several thousand, so what's going on?
The short answer is that the costs of book editing services vary because every manuscript is different, and so is every book editor. The type of editing you need, the length of your book, and the amount of work involved all play a part.
So first, what type of editing do you need? 👇
A lot of authors search for "book editing" when they're not entirely sure what kind of editing they're actually looking for, but that can give you a lot of vague results, so let me break them down for you quickly:
🖼️ If your plot, pacing, structure, character development/dialogue, voice, or POV still need work, you're probably looking at developmental editing.
📜 If the story elements are structurally okay but you need help with the overall flow and clarity of your writing, consistency of the mood, tone, style and narrative voice, plus sentence and paragraph structure for coherence and readability, line editing is best for you.
📝 If you feel that all of the above are fine and you just need help with syntax, grammar, the consistency of style and language usage, punctuation, spelling, typos, rogue spacing, and the formatting of headings, fonts and indents, copy editing is the next best step.
🔠 And if you only need the basics tweaked, so grammar, spelling, punctuation and typos, that's where proofreading comes in.
The more in-depth the edit, the more time it takes us, which naturally affects our costs, so developmental editing is often more expensive, while proofreading is usually the cheapest.
Why our editing prices differ so much...
Imagine asking, "How much does it cost to renovate a house?" 🏠
It's impossible to answer without seeing the house first, and editing is similar.
Two novels might both be 80,000 words long, but one may only need a light copy edit while the other requires extensive restructuring and detailed feedback, so the amount of work we do behind the scenes can be dramatically different. This is why some of us ask to see a sample before providing a quote. It helps us understand what your manuscript needs before providing a quote and turnaround time.
Also, different editors might revise different things within their services. For instance, one editor might merge line and copy editing to make one general service, whereas another editor might keep them strictly separate.
Is working with a professional book editor worth it then?
I'm obviously biased here because I'm a book editor, but I'd still say yes. Not because every manuscript needs to be perfect (there's no such thing!), but because it's so difficult to see your own work objectively. Even I'll need another editor to review my manuscript when it's finished, and so will other editors who are writing their own stories. 📝
When you've spent months or years writing a book, your brain fills in gaps automatically, so even when there's an obvious mistake, your brain knows what it's meant to say, but your readers don't. 🧠
A good editor acts as your first professional reader, spotting inconsistencies, confusing passages, pacing issues, and all the little things that can pull readers out of the story.
Okay, should I just choose the cheapest book editor then?
Not necessarily, no, but you don't need the most expensive one either.
What matters the most is finding someone who understands your genre, communicates clearly, and offers the level of support you're looking for. 😊
I'd always recommend asking for a sample edit if possible, even if the editor requests payment for it, because it's one of the best ways to see whether our style and approach feel like a good fit for you and your work.
So...
Working with us book editors is an investment, but it doesn't have to feel mysterious. The right editor won't just correct mistakes, we'll help you create the strongest version of your book while respecting your voice and vision for the manuscript.
If you're unsure what kind of editing your book needs, start by having a conversation with an actual book editor, like me! Most of us are happy to point authors in the right direction, even if you're not quite ready to book an edit yet.
